Not only was she a literary figure, for writing several travelogues and translating selected sonnets of Hafiz into English, but also her writings served as a cover and excuse for further activities in favor of the British government. In this regard, her travelogue The Desert and the Sown (1907) is of importance. Not only did this travelogue become very popular in Europe, but also it can be argued that it guaranteed the situation of the occupation of Palestine and the British imperialist and interventionist policies in the coming decades of the twentieth century in the Middle East. Therefore, this study examines and analyzes the aforementioned travelogue through Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism and new historicist practice in order to analyze and evaluate its Oriental discourse which consists of otherization of Arabs and cultural superiority of the Westerners over the Easterners. According to the Edward Said's orientalism critical perspective we conclude that Bell was not neutral when she faces with middle east and eastern culture. As a result, it seems that she was a political woman more than a sole writer and she tries to colonize the eastern countries.}, keywords = {Gertrude Bell,Orientalism,Domination Discourse,Otherization,Edward Said}, title_fa = {تحلیل انتقادی سفرنامه بیابان و کشتزار اثر گرترود بل بر اساس نظریه‌ی شرق‌شناسی ادوارد سعید}, abstract_fa = {گرترود بل، جهانگرد و سفرنامه‌نویس انگلیسی، سال‌های زیادی از عمر خود را در خاورمیانه و در کشورهای مختلفی همچون ایران، عربستان، سوریه، اردن و فلسطین سپری کرد. وی به علت نگارش چندین سفرنامه‌ و ترجمۀ گزیده‌ غزلیات حافظ به زبان انگلیسی نه تنها چهره‌‌ای ادبی بود، بلکه نوشتارهای او پوشش و بهانه‌ای برای پیشبرد فعالیت‌های جاسوسی دولت بریتانیا محسوب می‌شوند. در این میان، سفرنامۀ بیابان و کشتزار (1907) از اهمیت ویژه‌ای برخوردار است. این سفرنامه نه تنها در اروپا به محبوبیت دست یافت، بلکه می‌توان ادعا کرد که زمینه‌ی اشغال فلسطین و سیاست‌های امپریالیستی و مداخله‌جویانه‌ی بریتانیا در دهه‌های بعدی قرن بیستم در خاورمیانه را تضمین کرد. بنابراین، مطالعۀ حاضر به بررسی و تحلیل سفرنامۀ پیش‌گفته می‌پردازد و با استفاده از خوانش تاریخ‌باوری نوین و نظریه‌ی شرق‌شناسی ادوارد سعید، خوانشی شرق‌شناسانه از سفرنامه‌ی بل ارائه می‌دهد تا گفتمان شرق‌شناسی اثر، که فرآیند دیگری‌سازی اعراب و برتری فرهنگی غربی‌ها بر شرقی‌ها را دربرمی‌گیرد، مورد واکاوی و ارزیابی نقادانه قرار گیرد. بر اساس مفهوم شرق شناسی ادوارد سعید می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که گرترود بل در مواجه با فرهنگ و اهالی شرق به خصوص منطقه خاورمیانه بی‌طرف نبوده و صادقانه به روایت ماجرا نپرداخته است و نشان می‌دهد او بیشتر به عنوان یک فعال سیاسی در حوزه شرق و کشورهای خاورمیانه برای زیر سلطه بردن کشورهای مشرق زمین زیر سلطه غرب فعالیت می‌کرده است.}, keywords_fa = {گرترود بل,شرق‌شناسی,خاورمیانه,گفتمان سلطه,ادوارد سعید}, url = {https://lir.ihcs.ac.ir/article_6308.html}, eprint = {https://lir.ihcs.ac.ir/article_6308_47d1ec4966a9cc7e25630fc7368f7edc.pdf} }
